The East Coast Summit for Java Technology Set to Explore 'Platform for a New Millennium' On January 21 in NYC.

IBM Director of Java Marketing To Deliver Keynote at

Comprehensive Single-day Conference for Java Developers

Featuring 18 workshop sessions and 3 plenary sessions to meet the diverse needs of the full range of Java developers, the East Coast Summit for Java Technology will be held on January 21 from 8 am to 5 pm at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

The comprehensive, single-day summit will kick off with a breakfast keynote address by David Gee, IBM's Program Director for Java Marketing. Titled "Platform for a New Millennium: Why the Next Generation of Web Applications Will Be Built with Java," Mr. Gee's address promises to look at the growing importance of Java as the platform of the future. Mr. Gee has worldwide responsibility for IBM's marketing strategy, strategic business alliances and relationships with key industry influencers for Java and emerging eBusiness technologies.

"The East Coast Summit for Java Technology is not focused on hype, fancy booths or other trade show gimmicks," said Bruce Bernstein, NYSIA's president. "Rather, we're more concerned with the challenges and opportunities that Java developers face on an everyday basis. This summit is focused on the real exchange of ideas and information."

The summit offers six distinct tracks that address the different skill levels and areas of interest for a variety of developers. The six tracks are: Platforms and Tools; Emerging Java Technologies; Java in the Enterprise: eBusiness Applications; Java and the Web; Java Fundamentals; and Advanced Java Techniques. Within each track, there will be three breakout sessions with led by experts on Java from New York and around the country.

Sponsored by the New York Software Association (NYSIA), the summit will be held simultaneously with NYSIA's annual New York Software Summit. The New York Software Summit includes workshops in such disciplines as finance, emerging technologies, research & development, legal, sales & marketing, New York issues and special events.

IBM's contributors include James W. Cooper from the TJ Watson IBM Research Center who will be speaking on "Understanding and Using Design Patterns in Java". Dr. Cooper has authored 12 computer science and programming books and is just completing the "Java Companion to Design Patterns". Other IBM speakers are C. Jason Woodard on "Making Sense of the Component Debate: EJB and CORBA vs. ActiveX/COM"; Angus McIntyre on Enterprise JavaBeans; Karl Gottschalk on IBM's Strategy for Enterprise Java; and Verlyn Johnson on "Application Business Components: IBM San Francisco Overview". Mr. Gottschalk is the Java Technical Strategist for IBM, helping to coordinate all IBM Java activities going on in 25 laboratories across the world.

Sun Microsystems and Novell are playing leading roles in the conference as well. The Sun contingent is headlined by Rinaldo DiGiorgio. Rinaldo is a leading Sun Labs expert on using Java on a variety of devices such as smart cards, light switches, and set top boxes. He also writes a developer column for JavaWorld. His workshop is "Building End-to-End Solutions with JavaCard". Also participating from Sun will be Technology Evangelist Max Goff, who will give an overview of the groundbreaking Jini technology. Peter Brown from Novell will talk on "The Java Environment for Netware".

A large number of leading Java technologists from New York companies will offer workshops. One headliner is Paul Wanuga, the Chief Technology Officer of Transaction Information Systems. Paul will speak on "Real Time Collaborative Computing Using Java" and also on Java 3D. Frank Greco, the chair of the New York JavaSIG and the President of Crossroads Technologies, will offer "An Overview of Java Technology" and also an overview of using Java in enterprise computing. Andy Breen, another leading figure in the New York Java community, will show how to write Java servers. Martin Wattenberg from SmartMoney.com will speak on "Java Client Design"; Alex Chaffee, Purpletech, will give a "JDK 2 Overview"; Rodney Ryan, also from Crossroads Technologies, will talk about "Enhancing Java Performance"; and Gerry Seidman will give the workshop "Java for C++ Programmers."

The joint conference will also feature a keynote address by New York City Comptroller Alan Hevesi on the state of the software/information technology industry in New York and an afternoon keynote panel on "The Software/Internet Business in the Next Five Years." Following the all-day event, the NY Java SIG (Special Interest Group) will hold an evening event.

For the first time, nine major New York State digital technology organizations have come together to cosponsor The New York Software Summit/East Coast Summit for Java Technology.
