The Dubliner.

Oh Mother dear, I'm over here And I'm never coming back. What keeps me here is the beer, The women and the craic!

Pubs are an important Irish institution, and a growing phenomenon is the "Irish pub" abroad. These range from the theme park variety to the quirky bar run by an old couple from Cork. And I'm pleased to report that, despite no obvious evidence of Paddy the barman, The Dubliner has made a good effort to place itself at the latter, more genuine, end of this scale.

You may not be greeted by cries of "Cead mile failte" (a hundred thousand welcomes) as you walk through the door, but the Guinness on tap, rugby and hurling photos, and U2 blaring from the loudspeakers do a fair job of creating something akin to an Irish atmosphere.

Clientele can sit at the bar, in glass-partitioned booths or smallish, round tables. The menu is a mix of traditional Irish dishes and concessions to the Mexican palate, and vegetarians (although I know we are few!) do not fare badly either.

In the interests of research we ordered the mixed starter plate, which includes a potato cake Potato cakes may refer to different preparations of potatoes. In the U.S., the term commonly refers to a patty of hashed potatoes, a kind of hash brown. These are available pre-made and frozen in supermarkets and are sold by Arby's restaurants. , a crab cake A crab cake is an American dish comprised of a crab meat patty and various other ingredients such as breadcrumbs, milk, eggs, onions, and seasonings. Occasionally other ingredients such as red or green peppers are added, at which point the cake is then sautéed, baked, or grilled, , Irish sausages, chicken wings Chicken Wings can refer to:
  • A type of food, a serving of the wing sections of a chicken. Deep fried wings coated in sauce are also known as Buffalo wings.

with barbecue sauce and french fries. This was enough for two people to share. The crab cake came with a light tartar sauce, the chicken was voted tasty and the sausages disappeared without a trace, but the fries were more the skinny, fast food-style than the chunky Irish pub version.

The potato cakes (portion of three as an individual starter) were light and fluffy with a crispy coating, but don't get too excited about the cheddar cheese filling--it's not mature Irish farmhouse, but a less flavorsome variety of orange cheese. Other starters are fish and chips fish and chips

and mayo salsa, avocado and salad.

The usual salads--mixed, house, green and a few others--also populate the menu. The portions looked substantial and the ensalada colorida, with mixed and radiccio leaves, chicken breast and fried tortilla strips, could make a reasonable lunch dish.

The potato soup, probably ideal on a rainy Dublin afternoon, was a little too heavy and cheesy cheesy (che´ze) caseous.  for my tastes. But it had a mild flavor and went well with black pepper black pepper

. The lamb soup with chunky vegetables was pronounced hearty and mildly spicy. The menu also advertises a "soup of the day Soup of the Day is the loosely scripted 2006 internet phenomenon that told the story of one man who is dating three women at the same time. The main course selection boasts some classic Irish dishes like corned beef, shepherd's pie shep·herd's pie

The pricier Dublin Bay Dublin Bay (Irish: Cuan Bhaile Átha Cliath) is a delta shaped inlet of the Irish Sea off the east coast of Ireland. The bay is approximately 10 km in width at its north-south base and 7 km in length to its apex at the center of the city of Dublin, stretching from Howth Head  prawns were pronounced a bit bland, and just how close they'd been to Dublin Bay I'm not sure. There is also the ubiquitous hamburger, plus a lamb burger, as well as a range of steaks.

Desserts include Irish apple pie, with a light pastry and cinnamon flavor, bread pudding, Bailey's cheesecake, which was heavy and biscuity, plus a sherry trifle. The Irish coffee was good, if a little heavy on the cream.

You would be advised to arrive in the early evening if you are looking to have a quiet, leisurely meal (especially on Fridays or Saturdays), as the place tends to fill up quickly later on and become more "pub-like" with live music and dedicated drinkers.
