Todd's voice is extraordinary, rich and deep. We hear the personality of the characters, with all of their earnestness, shaped by awareness of their stations in life. Judith is defined by her beauty and Hetty by her feeble mind, just as Deerslayer is defined by his noble qualities. It does get a tad wearing, along with such references as being true to one's race, even as a period piece. The Leatherstocking Tales reached a worldwide audience and form a solid part of America's literary history. The audiobook version is preferable to print. Vivian E. Berg, Mandan, ND |
