of Data Warehouse Appliances," Philip Russom, senior manager of research and services, reported that data warehouse appliances are increasingly implemented by organizations seeking a cost-effective, high-performance platform for data analysis. Russom is a veteran information technology industry analyst who has covered business intelligence and related issues for Forrester Research Forrester Research is an independent technology and market research company that provides its clients with advice about technology's impact on business and consumers. Based on findings from its August 2005 Tech Survey, Russom reports that 39 percent of TDWI members who responded are currently using or evaluating a data warehouse appliance for implementation in their data center. With pricing models well below traditional data warehouse platforms and measurable performance and simplicity benefits for the end user, more and more organizations are realizing the advantages these purpose-built systems can deliver for achieving business objectives. Additionally, Russom identified one to 10 terabyte data ranges, including data marts and enterprise data warehouses (EDW EDW Enterprise Data Warehouse

), to be the main area of opportunity for data warehouse appliances, and sees this growing to the 20 terabyte range in the next couple of years to accommodate exponentially growing data.

"Through our research and regular dialog with TDWI members, it is clear that there is a strong and growing interest in the data warehouse appliances. Our Tech Survey results show that appliances are perceived as bringing innovation and business benefits to the data warehouse industry," said Russom. "TDWI will continue to track the growth of this important new area and report on the real-world experiences of our partners and members as more data warehouse appliances are deployed in enterprise data centers."

"TDWI's findings validate the data warehouse appliance approach pioneered and led by Netezza. The single system architecture has proven to be a more cost-effective means of accessing enormous amounts of dynamic, detailed data quickly, and performing analyses that just weren't possible--or affordable--with legacy, general-purpose systems," said Ellen Rubin, vice president of marketing, Netezza Corp. "With the NPS system, Fortune 1000 companies can conduct in-depth analyses of their data and leverage the important trends and information contained within it for business insight and advantage."

The Netezza Performance Server system is the market-leading data warehouse appliance, built specifically to analyze terabytes of detailed data 10 to 50 times faster than existing data warehouse options, at half the cost. Netezza's product line scales to accommodate data sizes of 400 gigabytes to 100 terabytes of data. The NPS system stores, filters and processes terabytes of records within a single unit, analyzing only the relevant information for each query. The system's advantage is in its patent-pending Intelligent Query Streaming(TM) design: Netezza has placed processing power next to the data so data analysis occurs at the source at streaming speeds, enabling dramatic increases in productivity across the organization.
