The Colorado Chautauqua in Boulder Named Colorado's 19th National Historic Landmark; Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton Approves Colorado Chautauqua National Historic Landmark Designation.


BOULDER, Colo. -- The office of U.S. Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton Gale Ann Norton (born March 11, 1954) served as the 48th United States Secretary of the Interior from 2001 to 2006 under President George W. Bush. She was the first woman to hold the position.  announced today that the Colorado Chautauqua The Colorado Chautauqua, located in Boulder, Colorado, United States, and started in 1898, is the only Chautauqua west of the Mississippi River still continuing in unbroken operation since the heyday of the Chautauqua Movement in the 1920s.  in Boulder is now officially Colorado's 19th National Historic Landmark A National Historic Landmark (NHL) is a building, district, site, structure, or object, almost always within the United States, officially recognized by the United States government for its historical significance. . The designation of a property as a National Historic Landmark means that it is recognized as being "of national significance" and possessing "exceptional value or quality in illustrating and interpreting the heritage of the United States."

. The Colorado Chautauqua is one of only three remaining chautauquas in the U.S. and the only site west of the Mississippi River in continuous operation with its original structures intact.

The CCA and the Denver regional center of the National Park Service spent nearly two years crafting a persuasive 63-page nomination package, which had to be approved by two national advisory committees before a final decision from Secretary Norton.

A number of events celebrating Colorado Chautauqua's new status as a National Historic Landmark will follow over subsequent months.
