The Cider House Rules. (Enduring Favorites).

Irving, John Irving, John, 1942–, American writer, b. Exeter, N.H. His mixture of wild plot strategies and eccentric characters brought him to wide attention with his fourth novel, The World According to Garp (1978). . THE CIDER HOUSE A cider house is an establishment, often little more than a room in a farmhouse or cottage, selling cider only, for consumption on the premises.

The cider sold is usually brewed on the premises, from apples grown in a local cider orchard.
RULES. Homer Wells, an orphan, is taken under the wing of his orphanage's doctor--an ethersniffing, kindly abortionist abortionist /abor·tion·ist/ (ah-bor´shun-ist) one who performs abortions. . Homer spreads his wings and experiences the world away from his childhood "home." This is a classic Irving tale with richly developed, quirky and always human characters.
