Leading-Edge Eclipsys Solution to Facilitate System-Wide

Integration of Multiple Clinical Applications

Eclipsys Corporation(R) (Nasdaq:ECLP), The Outcomes Company(R), today announced that The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is one of the largest and oldest children's hospitals in the world. "CHOP" has been ranked as the best children's hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report and Child Magazine in recent years. , one of the world's premier pediatric pediatric /pe·di·at·ric/ (pe?de-at´rik) pertaining to the health of children.

hospitals and research facilities, has selected Eclipsys' Sunrise(TM) Clinical Manager solution as the centerpiece of its clinical-integration and patient-safety strategies.

Founded in 1855 as the nation's first hospital devoted exclusively to children's care and recently ranked as the best children's hospital A children's hospital is a hospital which offers its services exclusively to children. The number of children's hospitals proliferated in the 20th century, as pediatric medical and surgical specialties separated from internal medicine and adult surgical specialties.  in the U.S. in a comprehensive survey by Child magazine, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will implement Sunrise Clinical Manager's knowledge-driven physician order-entry, results reporting, clinical documentation and clinical data repository A Clinical Data Repository (CDR) is a real-time database that consolidates data from a variety of clinical sources to present a unified view of a single patient. It is optimized to allow clinicians to retrieve data for a single patient rather than to identify a population of  features in its flagship Philadelphia facility, providing physicians with access to patient data in the hospital and across the health network.

"Children's Hospital has enjoyed a successful relationship with Eclipsys over the years and has realized significant benefits from use of the Eclipsys 7000 clinical information system," said Al Sinisi, Children's Hospital vice president and CIO CIO: see American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.

. "We believe that evolving from the 7000 system to Sunrise Clinical Manager with its enhanced feature-functionality will support our strategic goal of providing clinicians with the tools they need to enhance productivity, improve the quality of care they provide and reduce avoidable medical errors. We view Clinical Manager's electronic data repository See repository. , Knowledge-Based Orders(TM) feature and integrated clinical-documentation capabilities as critical to achieving these goals."

Clinical Manager to integrate disparate systems

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia joins a growing number of prestigious healthcare organizations that are evolving from the Eclipsys 7000 heritage clinical system and related components to the open, component-based architecture and advanced clinical-management capabilities of Eclipsys' leading-edge clinical solution, Sunrise Clinical Manager.

Now in use or being implemented at nearly 100 healthcare facilities, Clinical Manager features Knowledge-Based Orders, providing physicians and other clinicians with multiple levels of clinical decision support based on multi-factorial data, ranging from real-time checking of drug-drug and drug-allergy interactions to more-advanced time- and location-specific duplicate order checking. Using the full extent of electronic patient information available, Sunrise Knowledge-Based Orders provides expert levels of checking relative to changes in a patient's condition. Clinical Manager also features order communication and management, multidisciplinary clinical documentation, physician office documentation and workflow, and disease-management care-documentation capabilities.

Clinical Manager is unique in enabling customers such as Children's Hospital to transition and upgrade from both Eclipsys heritage and non-Eclipsys products. Clinical Manager will retain clinical data that currently resides in the hospital's Eclipsys 7000 system and also will serve as the single-source repository of clinical information now housed in disparate applications throughout the organization. These applications from vendors such as Meditech Inc., IDX Systems IDX Systems Corporation (IDX) was a healthcare software technology company that formerly had headquarters in South Burlington, Vermont. It was founded in 1969 by Robert Hoehl, Richard Tarrant, and Paul Egerman.  Corp. and others -- in areas such as transcription, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology radiology, branch of medicine specializing in the use of X rays, gamma rays, radioactive isotopes, and other forms of radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.  and patient registration -- will be incorporated in Clinical Manager's clinical data repository.

"Sunrise Clinical Manager's ability to integrate information from both Eclipsys and non-Eclipsys applications offers flexibility and added value Added value in financial analysis of shares is to be distinguished from value added. Used as a measure of shareholder value, calculated using the formula:

that other clinical systems can't match," Sinisi noted. "Clinical Manager will allow us to evolve from the Eclipsys 7000 while also supporting a variety of non-Eclipsys legacy systems now in use at the hospital. This will enable us to preserve and leverage our investment in those existing systems while substantially upgrading the overall quality of our clinical information-management system."

Clinical Manager also will facilitate the hospital's efforts to integrate physician practice patterns across its growing health network. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's affiliated physicians are dispersed throughout a geographic network encompassing the Pennsylvania/New Jersey/Delaware tri-state area There are a number of places in the United States known as tri-state areas where three states or holdings meet at one point (a tripoint), or in proximity to each other. The two most well-known are for the New York and Chicago metropolitan areas. . "Sunrise Clinical Manager, whether the desktop or Web-based versions, will provide our clinical community with continuous access to patient records from virtually any location within the network, thus enabling the organization to accomplish a key strategic objective -- enhanced system integration," stated Gordon Zeis, manager, Clinical Applications.

Knowledge-driven insight: New care frontiers

"Children's Hospital also is counting on Clinical Manager features to obtain even greater levels of clinical and financial ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot). ," Zeis continued. "We will utilize Knowledge-Based Orders to assist the clinician clinician /cli·ni·cian/ (kli-nish´in) an expert clinical physician and teacher.

at the point of data entry to further our proven ability to provide excellent pediatric care." Like healthcare providers across the nation, Children's Hospital is turning to sophisticated, computer-based information solutions to even further reduce clinical risk factors that may lead to errors. The National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine (IOM IOM

), whose initial 1999 report and March 2001 follow-up study have greatly increased public awareness of the need to dramatically reduce medical errors, has recommended expanded use of knowledge-driven information solutions such as Sunrise Clinical Manager to achieve the goal of reducing avoidable medical events by at least half within five years.

Providing its clinicians with the advanced, computerized tools needed to respond proactively to the challenges set forth by the Institute of Medicine is a major priority for the hospital. "Maintaining the highest quality of patient care is always a fundamental guiding principle," stated Sinisi.

"Eclipsys is extremely pleased to expand our long-time partnership with The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and to assist its efforts in implementing an enterprise-wide clinical information system that will enable clinicians to access patient data from different applications in an easy-to-use format that simplifies and enhances workflow and clinical processes throughout the organization," said Harvey J.
