It covers all aspects of the Faith, though it does it not in a question-and-answer format suitable for catechisms but with numerous references to the lives of saints and others, and with frequent quotations from saints and others. The emphasis of the book is that Catholicism provides a positive, not a negative, outlook on life. Catholicism is presented as an invitation to love. God is a loving creator, very merciful mer·ci·ful adj. Full of mercy; compassionate: sought merciful treatment for the captives. See Synonyms at humane. mer , and humans are called to respond to God with love. The author has the knack of making Catholic doctrine attractive. He says: "The choice I made in this book is ... to explain Catholicism by way of the experience and faith expressions of real Catholics--saints, composers, poets, playwrights List of notable playwrights. The author is also aware that many Catholics, having grown up in the Faith but not having kept up with their knowledge of it, must face important new questions today. These persons are presented often with secular answers given by scientists, philosophers, politicians, and the mass media, and are in danger of falling away from the Faith, finding other things to believe in, other passions to occupy their days. We are not supposed to graduate from our Faith as we might graduate from high school. Our knowledge of it should deepen deep·en tr. & intr.v. deep·ened, deep·en·ing, deep·ens To make or become deep or deeper. deepen Verb to make or become deeper or more intense Verb 1. as our relationship with Jesus deepens. This is an excellent book for anyone who wishes a powerful positive presentation of the whole of our Faith as a love affair between the God of love and men and women in our day. Catholics and those who are not Catholics will enjoy this presentation. BOOK REVIEWED BY FR. LEONARD A. KENNEDY, C.S.B. |
