The Cardinal's Dinner once more. (Canada).Toronto--The Cardinal's Dinner, which raises funds for a variety of Catholic charities, became a controversial event this year by choosing John Turner as chairman (see C.I., Oct/01, pp. 27-28). In our November issue we printed the editor's reply to the statement issued by the Toronto Archdiocesan Communications Office on October 1 (Letters to the Editor, pp. 5-6). Readers will recall that this provided a whitewash whitewash, white fluid commonly used as an inexpensive, impermanent coating for walls, fences, stables, and other exterior structures. It varies in composition, being generally a mixture of lime (quicklime), water, flour, salt, glue, and whiting, with other for John Turner's role in the legalization LEGALIZATION. Polls continue to show that a majority of Canadians believe abortion should remain legal in some circumstances ( . So, how did the dinner go? About 1,800 guests attended, raising some $300,000 for charitable purposes. Visiting Cardinal Edward Cassidy from Australia was duly impressed. Also, over 700 copies of Father de Valk's response in the November C.I., were handed out to the arriving guests. The Catholic Register, in its coverage, briefly mentioned the protest at the end of its article, referring to "a small band of anti-abortion protesters." Comment: The Archdiocesan action in first inviting Mr. John Turner and then attempting to whitewash his abortion record completely baffled pro-lifers, even stupefied stu·pe·fy tr.v. stu·pe·fied, stu·pe·fy·ing, stu·pe·fies 1. Not a word was uttered by anybody (except pro-life supporters) about Trudeau's central political role in the opening up of abortion and homosexual "rights" in Canada. Over the last few years the Canadian Catholic Health Association has invited well-known, anti-Catholic, pro-abortion speakers such as David Suzuki and Stephen Lewis to deliver key-note addresses. Last May, St. Joseph's Health Care Centre in Hamilton, ON, welcomed U.S. President Bill Clinton--who has done more than any other president to promote the culture of death--as a speaker for their fundraising event. Is this all the result of 30 years of emphasising a one-sided Canadian Catholic Social Justice program, divorced from pro-life issues? This kind of counter-witness certainly harms pro-life work, both educational and political. |
