A patient with peripheral edema may actually have a decreased vascular volume. The improper treatment of a burn patient's volume status by diuresing that patient to eliminate edema in the presence of a low intravascular volume could result in pre-renal azotemia azotemia /az·o·te·mia/ (az?o-te´me-ah) uremia; an excess of urea or other nitrogenous compounds in the blood.
