She was born in Lancaster, England. Her first major television role was as Elinor Dashwood in the BBC's 1971 dramatisation of Sense and Sensibility

Norwegian journalist Asne Seierstad, finished with accompanying the commandos of the Northern Alliance during the war in Afghanistan, was intrigued by a bookshop in Kabul and its owner, SuP tan Khan khan

Historically, the ruler or monarch of a Mongol tribe. Early on a distinction was made between the title of khan and that of khakan, or “great khan.” Later the term khan was adopted by the Seljuq and Khwarezm-Shah dynasties as a title for the highest
. She saw him as "an Afghan patriot who felt let down by his country time and time again," his books burned by both communists and Taliban. But the book (though you can't tell from the cover note) is only incidentally about Khan.

Sensing an emotionally deeper story, Seierstad spent four months in Khan's crowded home, moving about more freely than the Afghan women though sometimes in a burkha. Writing in what she calls a literary style, she tells about their lives post-Taliban, reaching out yet bound culturally and emotionally by ancient traditions.  and marriage, and empathizes with the youngest daughter who finds herself locked into her role as an overworked household servant. The sons of the family, hungry for wider experience, are also bound by custom and their father's authority.

David enriches listeners' feeling for the family's inner lives. A story that goes beyond mere reporting.
