The Big Isle: Pele's playground.


The Big Island of Hawaii is a rainbow of delights in many different shades. A wide-open freedom about the Big Island encourages inhaling big gulps of fresh air, letting go of any troublesome thoughts, and donning comfortable clothes to seek new adventures. Convention facilities on this island are mainly for small-to medium-sized groups, though on the Kohala Coast alone, the Hilton Waikoloa Village, the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Mauna Lani, and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows all house ballrooms and meeting rooms in plush, tropical surroundings. Hilton Waikoloa Village's Catering and Convention Services department stages memorable parties, according its director, Rob Gunther. Even though the resort boasts 100,000 square feet of outdoor space on 62 acres of private beaches and rolling lawns, plus a 24,744-square-foot Grand Ballroom

A limited number of lucky individuals might even book their own dolphin encounter in the resort's lagoons.

Set to open in August, the new Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel boasts an open-air central courtyard surrounded by meeting rooms with a ballroom on one side that can accommodate receptions for 850 or banquets for 650. Video, lighting, and recording equipment is so high-tech that Hollywood would be happy to work in the hotel's conference facilities.
