The jury (p28) selected one prize winner and commended 20 others from a field of over 900 (some of which are shown below). As might be expected, the majority of entries from architects under 45 were of relatively small schemes, and among the selected works there was a good proportion of houses from South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. to the USA, Greece to Australia. But there was also a great range of other types: transport buildings for instance in Germany and Austria, a cultural centre for the Arctic, a church in Japan, a library in India, a town hall in Spain and much else. There were rather more inventive in·ven·tive adj. 1. Of, relating to, or characterized by invention. 2. Adept or skillful at inventing; creative. in·ven new offices than we expected. Perhaps surprisingly, relatively few interiors and conversions made it to the last round of judging, but the premiated ones, in Budapest and Munich, show a high standard of ingenuity and sensitivity to context.
