The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 4th edition. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2000.

This latest edition of the American Heritage Dictionary features over 10,000 new words that have found their way into the language; 4,000 color photographs, illustrations, and maps; contributions from a 200 member usage panel of experts; and a CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

The dictionary also features engaging Notes dealing with word histories, word usage, and many other appropriate topics. A new Notes program, "Our Living Language," shows how American subcultures (from teenagers to immigrants) have influenced the way words are used, such as "rent" to mean "parent." And if you prefer to hear a word's pronunciation rather than to read it, you can use the dictionary's CD-ROM for a point and click aural demonstration.

Joseph Pickett, the executive editor of the dictionary, says he received an American Heritage Dictionary many years ago as a high school graduation present and the gift sparked a lifelong love of words. I'm not sure giving this dictionary to a graduate today would have the same effect, but I feel sure its recipients will have an easier time figuring out what is going on in the vast symbolic world of our language.
