The Smarts are brainy brain·y

Intelligent; smart.

enough: Michael is a university professor; Eve is a successful author; Magnus is a 16-year-old semi-genius; and Astrid, at 12, is unusually advanced in thought and expression. But their weaknesses, both individually and as a family group, are manifold. Although Michael truly loves Eve, he is a sexual predator with an appetite for his students. Eve's writing is popular but trivial and repetitive. Magnus is in agony because he believes that he caused, inadvertently, the suicide of a female classmate.

Astrid, whiny and witchy, is experiencing teenage angst early. Having made a poor decision in choosing unfashionable Norfolk as a vacation spot, they are barely enduring the location and their togetherness when a strange 30ish woman, Amber, knocks at the door of their rental house and is invited in. Michael assumes she is Eve's friend; Eve assumes she is one of Michael's clandestine lovers. Less a character than a dea ex machina, Amber ruthlessly intrudes upon the family. Eventually Eve evicts Amber, but supposedly everyone has benefited by her penetrating analysis of their problems.

Character development in general is superb. The choice of an ensemble cast of two men and three women, each representing one of the principals, is perfect for this introspective in·tro·spect
