The Abyssinians know reggae from the roots up.

The pioneering reggae vocal trio the Abyssinians will bring the sounds of Kingston, Jamaica The City of Kingston is the capital and largest city of Jamaica. It is located on the southeastern coast of the island country at Coordinates: . , to the WOW Hall tonight.

The group, which formed in 1968, now features original members Donald Manning and Bernard Collins, with David Morrison. Its seminal hit, 1969's "Satta Massagana," usually referred to simply as "Satta," is one of reggae's most recorded songs. The title means "give thanks and praise" in Amharic, the language of Ethiopia.

The Abyssinians' debut full-length album, `Forward Onto Zion," was recorded in 1976, introducing the group to inter- national acclaim.

Catch the Rasta wave today at the WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave. DJ Jah Ryan also is on the bill; he'll spin records beginning at 9 p.m.; the Abyssinians will take the stage at 10 p.m.

Tickets are $14 in advance, available at CD & Game Exchange, CD World, House of Records, Taco Loco, the Erb Memorial Union ticket office and the WOW Hall. At the door, admission will be $16.

, fear not. There's a chance to see "Oregon's Idol" tonight at Luna.

The 20-year-old singer-song- writer from Corvallis won Clear Channel's Oregon Idol contest in 2003. Since then, she's been singing and recording across the country. Her latest album is "Thinking Out Loud." Arlyn will perform today beginning at 8 p.m. at Luna, 30 E. Broadway.

The cover is $5.

Olem Alves

Today, Downtown Lounge

Olem Alves and Inner Limits, along with Sammy's good eye, will bring a dose of jazz tonight to Diablo's/The Downtown Lounge.

Alves is one of the most popular performers on the local jazz scene, while Sammy's good eye is a band of relative newcomers. All the members are music students who play funk rock.

Showtime is 10 p.m., and the cover is $5. The Downtown Lounge is at 959 Pearl St.

Tom Freund Tom Freund is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the U.S.A.. He is a former member of the alternative country band The Silos and has worked with Ben Harper and Graham Parker.

Intrigued? Younger will lead a time warp at 10 p.m. Thursday at Luckey's Club Cigar Store Luckey’s Club Cigar Store was purchased in 1911 by Tad Luckey, Sr., the son of Irish immigrants and an early Eugene pioneer. It is the oldest retail business in downtown Eugene, and one of the oldest bars in Oregon. , 933 Olive St. The cover is $3 to $5 on a sliding scale.
