The boat building industry includes about 1,000 companies with combined annual revenue of about $10 billion. Large companies include Brunswick, which owns approximately 25 brands; Genmar; and Yamaha-owned Century. The industry is concentrated: the largest 50 companies hold about 75 percent market share. A typical company has ten employees and less than $2 million in annual sales.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Demand depends on consumer income. The profitability of individual companies is linked to manufacturing and design efficiencies. Large companies have advantages in name recognition and product distribution. Small companies compete by focusing on a market niche in a local or regional area. Because of automation and high product prices, annual revenue per employee is a fairly high $180,000.
