The 2000 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Awards.The 2000 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Awards awarded a total of [pound]16,000 to eight books on the art, culture, historical, technological and scientific aspects of photography. With a record entry of over 300 books from 17 countries, the awards for the prize-winning books was extremely competitive. The two main prizes for Art, Culture & History of [pound]5000 each were awarded to Boris Mikhailov's Case History (Scalo, Switzerland). A collection of photographs from Mikhailov's birthplace of Kharkov, Ukraine, Case History captures the essence of everyday life amid the homelessness and poverty that resulted from the break-up of the former Soviet Union. Unforgiving photographs portray intimate glimpses into the hearts of individuals whose willpower allows them to survive while they are surrounded with the decay of their economy, buildings and individual lives. Sidney F. Ray's Scientific Photography and Applied Imaging (Focal Press, UK) received the [pound]5000 main prize in the Craft, Technology and Scientif ic book category. The extensively illustrated and researched book covers the use of photography and images as tools in science, technology and medicine and is aimed at professionals and scientists. The basic theory, techniques, materials, special equipment and applications of photography are fully described. Six other books received special commendations, with each author receiving [pound]1000: Passion, Justice, Freedom: Photographs of Sicily by Letizia Battaglia Letizia Battaglia (Palermo, 1935) is a Sicilian photographer and photojournalist. Although her photos document a wide spectrum of Sicilian life, she is best known for her work on the Mafia. Biography She was born in Palermo, Sicily.
