The 1993 Soft Letter 100.Last year, millions of software users migrated from DOS to Windows, and the result was profound upheaval throughout the software industry. In almost every application category, well-established market leaders found themselves losing ground to second- and third-tier rivals, who were often quicker to ship Windows titles and more aggressive at attracting new buyers. Technology markets are inherently volatile, but 1992 saw more surprise winners and losers, more upset standards, and more uncertainty in distribution channels than any year in recent memory. The biggest single winner from the Windows boom, however, was Microsoft, which successfully challenged top-tier rivals in almost every high-volume product category. Although only a runner-up in such key categories as word processing word processing, use of a computer program or a dedicated hardware and software package to write, edit, format, and print a document. Text is most commonly entered using a keyboard similar to a typewriter's, although handwritten input (see pen-based computer) and , spreadsheets, and databases, Microsoft gained so much leverage from its stake in so many Windows niches last year that the company's 1992 revenues (roughly $3.3 billion) nearly caught up with the $4 billion in total revenues that the rest of the industry's Top Ten companies generated. At the same time, Microsoft also dramatically increased its share of the $9.3 billion in revenues produced by the software industry's 100 largest firms. Over the past few years, we've watched that percentage climb steadily: In 1988, Microsoft's Soft-letter 100 revenue share was 21.3%; in 1989, 22.5%; in 1990, 25.4%; in 1991, 30.0%; and in 1992, 35.1%. Seeing this trendline accelerate, it's hardly surprising that most of the software industry views Microsoft's success with growing alarm. But the Soft-letter 100 rankings also underscore the fact that there are good-sized segments of the market where Microsoft's presence is not so pervasive. Every year, we keep discovering upstart companies that exist comfortably outside the mainstream--in vertical markets, in emerging horizontal categories, and in obscure technology niches. Often, these companies are surprisingly large and fast-growing, they control proprietary distribution channels that mass-market competitors have difficulty penetrating, and they achieve productivity levels that are well above average (usually a good measure of long-term profitability). To us, the continuing success of these smaller Soft-letter 100 companies is an important measure of the overall health of the software industry. Microsoft may be a formidable challenge to other large applications developers, but--so far--we see no shortage of viable opportunities for well-focused, aggressive entrepreneurs. * GROWTH TRENDS Industry growth: Besides Windows and Microsoft's increasing presence in so many markets, software companies in 1992 were also challenged by relatively sluggish growth in the overall marketplace. Although software sales still grew at an enviable rate compared to other industries and the worldwide economy, most Soft-letter 100 growth indicators declined during 1992, compared to 1991 and 1990: * The year-to-year growth rate, which compares total 1992 Soft-letter 100 revenues to the 1991 Soft-letter 100 total, showed a 22% rise in revenues (from $7.582 billion to $9,273 billion). The comparable year-to-year rate for 1991 was 33%; for 1990, 41%. This rate is a reasonable measure of overall market growth, but it is skewed skewed curve of a usually unimodal distribution with one tail drawn out more than the other and the median will lie above or below the mean. skewed Epidemiology adjective Referring to an asymmetrical distribution of a population or of data somewhat by the 15%-20% turnover in companies that qualify for each year's rankings. * The weighted average growth rate, which we calculate by comparing total 1992 Soft-letter 100 sales to 1991 sales for the same companies, was 27%. Last year's weighted average growth was 32%; 1990, 34%. AS its name implies, the weighted average is heavily influenced by the performance of companies with larger sales volumes (in particular Microsoft, whose individual growth rate last year was a hefty 43%). * The unweighted average growth rate, which treats small and large company growth rates Growth Rates The compounded annualized rate of growth of a company's revenues, earnings, dividends, or other figures. Notes: Remember, historically high growth rates don't always mean a high rate of growth looking into the future. as equal data points, was 39% in 1992. This rate, along with the median rate, is usually the most appropriate measure for managers who want to compare their own company's growth against an industry benchmark. The unweighted average growth for 1991 Soft-letter 100 companies was 35%; for 1990, 40%. * The median growth rate, which reflects the midpoint mid·point n. 1. Mathematics The point of a line segment or curvilinear arc that divides it into two parts of the same length. 2. A position midway between two extremes. between this year's highest and lowest growth rates, was 21%. Last year's median growth rate was 28%, and the 1990 median rate was 31%. Growth vs. company size: When we look at growth rates in the context of company size, it becomes clear that the ten largest companies on our list (except Microsoft and Novell) generally experienced the most severe constraints on growth during 1992. These companies tended to compete in the most overcrowded o·ver·crowd v. o·ver·crowd·ed, o·ver·crowd·ing, o·ver·crowds v.tr. To cause to be excessively crowded: a system of consolidation that only overcrowded the classrooms. and price-sensitive categories, while smaller firms generally experienced less severe competition: * PRODUCTIVITY TREMDS At the end of 1992, Soft-letter 100 companies employed a total of 44,430 people, up 14% from a 1991 headcount of 39,063. Not surprisingly, the majority of those employees work for big companies--73% for the ten largest firms, and 29% for Microsoft alone. Moreover, these employees tend to be remarkably productive, especially at larger companies. Overall, the 100 companies on our 1992 list achieved an average sales-per-employee ratio of $208,703 (up from $194,085 in 1991). * OTHER STATISTICS Public and private: The 1992 Soft-letter 100 include 36 public companies (up from 31 last year and 27 the year before) and 64 that are privately held. However, public companies increasingly dominate the industry, with an 83% share of total 1992 Soft-letter 100 revenues (up from 79% the year before). International: In 1992, the international market once again represented a major source of revenue for Soft-letter 100 companies. Although the median contribution to revenues was a relatively modest 18% for all companies on our list, 50% of revenues among the Top Ten came from overseas sales. The real international sales leaders, however, all brought in more than half of their revenues from overseas customers: * NOTES ON METHODOLOGY The Soft-letter 100, published annually since 1984, is defined formally as "a ranking of the top 100 personal computer software companies in the U.S., based on calendar year revenues." That definition (which continues to evolve with the industry itself) helps explain why some companies appear on our list, and why others are excluded. Our basic eligibility rules eligibility rules, n.pl the conditions that define who may be entitled to dental benefits, when persons first become entitled to such benefits, and any provisions that determine how long an individual remains entitled to benefits. are simple: To be ranked, a company must be an independent, U.S.-based company (subsidiaries do not qualify) that generates at least 50% of its revenues from personal computer software development or publishing. For the great majority of the companies we review, eligibility is a straight forward issue. But every year we are challenged by several dozen or more difficult cases that we try--not always to everyone's satisfaction--to treat logically and consistently. Perhaps the biggest problem is creating a workable definition of "personal computing Refers to users working on their own computers rather than a terminal to a mainframe. Sometimes, the term refers to using computers at home for work and/or entertainment in contrast to business use only. See personal computer. ." Traditionally, personal computer software was any product that ran on a microcomputer-based machine. That definition has become increasingly obsolete, now that microcomputer architectures and operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. have taken over large portions of the server, workstation, and minicomputer (1) An earlier medium-scale, centralized computer that functioned as a multiuser system for up to several hundred users. The minicomputer industry was launched in 1959 after Digital Equipment Corporation introduced its PDP-1 for $120,000, an unheard-of low price for a computer in markets. Hardware platforms Each hardware platform, or CPU family, has a unique machine language. All software presented to the computer for execution must be in the binary coded machine language of that CPU. Following is a list of the major hardware platforms in existence today. See platform. and operating systems simply do not tell us much any more about the nature of the software they support. So what defines "personal computer software"? In determining eligibility, we now look at several issues: patterns of use (does the user perform personal tasks or function as part of a workgroup or enterprise-wide system?), pricing (is the price level appropriate for an individual purchase?), distribution channels (in particular, is the product marketed to individual end users or to MIS departments?), and the local computing environment (does the product function in an open, multi-product world or only as part of a closed and centralized system In telecommunications, a centralized system is one in which most communications are routed through one or more major central hubs. Such a system allows certain functions to be concentrated in the system's hubs, freeing up resources in the peripheral units. ?). Even with these guidelines, we're left with several borderline cases, especially in the area of development tools for client-server and workgroup applications. We continue to watch market trends closely in these areas, because we recognize that the client-server model client-server model - client-server will become increasingly important for the software industry. On another front, we currently don't include companies that create software for dedicated or single-purpose hardware platforms. This rule applies primarily to the videogame segment, where the basic platforms as yet don't support general purpose applications. Finally, it's important to note that our rankings only include companies that supply data on the record. To insure accountability, we don't accept estimates from analysts or other outside sources; thus, several privately-held companies do not appear in our rankings because they declined to provide us with revenue data.
