Thales Unveils Sought-After Demo of Warfighter Radio System.

CLARKSBURG, Md. -- Thales Communications Thales Communications Inc., a subsidiary of the Thales Group, is a leading manufacturer of tactical communications equipment, including the MBITR, currently fielded with the US Army and NATO forces worldwide. , Inc., has advanced the overall communications capability of the warfighter with the completion of a suite of system components for its Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS JTRS Joint Tactical Radio System

) Enhanced Multiband Inter/Intra Team Radio (MBITR MBITR Multiband Inter/Intra Team Radio (US military) ), or JEM. The new system, which includes a vehicle adapter, vehicle adapter amplifier, base station, tactical repeater, and man portable system, operates with the existing combat-proven MBITR platform as well as with the JEM.

Thales' JEM has been developed in conjunction with the JTRS Cluster 2 program, on which Thales is the prime contractor. The JEM, the world's first JTRS production radio, is the first Software Communication Architecture (SCA (Single Connector Attachment) An 80-pin plug and socket used to connect peripherals. With a SCSI drive, it rolls three cables (power, data channel and ID configuration) into one connector for fast installation and removal. ) radio to pass the Early Operational Assessment and JTRS Technology Laboratory SCA verification testing.

By developing system components that translate directly over to the new JEM, Thales has increased the value in near-term investment in MBITR and provided an upgrade path from MBITR to JEM that is seamless, cost-effective, and, most important of all, risk-free. This facilitates immediate fielding, retained investment, and implementation of JTRS SCA-compliant radios outside handheld portable applications and into multiple battlefield applications. Populating the battlefield with JTRS SCA-compliant radios is now achievable in the near term with JEM and JEM-equipped system components for vehicular mounted radios, dismounts, and fixed-site applications.

"JEM continues the legacy of Thales performance in the handheld radio market and dominance in the development of JTRS technology for size, weight, and power-constrained environments," said Diane Reineke, vice president for business development. "With our system solution, our battle-proven radio is just the beginning."

The Thales JEM and system components will be demonstrated during the Special Operations Forces Those Active and Reserve Component forces of the Military Services designated by the Secretary of Defense and specifically organized, trained, and equipped to conduct and support special operations.
