Young Prince Florin is ecstatic when he learns that the war between Moltovia and Vinland is over. He rushes eagerly to join his father and the king's courtiers at the court of King Theodo in Vinland to celebrate the peace. But Prince Florin's reunion with his father is anything but joyful; instead, his father and courtiers have been taken prisoner and languish in Theodo's dungeons, awaiting execution. Florin is turned over to Theodo's jester, Mimus, to be his apprentice. At first, Florin resists his training, horrified at being kept in a stable and literally treated like an animal. Eventually, he begins to learn his new trade, even making friends with one of the boys who works in the kitchens, and in time comes reason to hope for rescue.

This is a powerful, thoughtful, and thought-provoking novel; its subtle narrative is packed with nuances. There is far more to Mimus than meets the eye: only he is perceptive enough to understand where the warring countries are headed, politically and psychologically. The characterization is exquisite, demonstrating the complexity of human personality, and the translation is smooth and lively, employing rich language and images.
