How it Works

The all-laptop Empire High School opens this fall.

* Students will receive a laptop to keep for the school year

* At school, students tap into the campus' wireless network

* At home, they complete homework on the computer

* Parents assume responsibility for the machine or pay $54 for an insurance policy that replaces the laptop if it's stolen or broken

* While some textbooks may be used, the vast majority of classwork and homework will be done electronically

* Teachers set curriculum around the state standards and use academic online and electronic resources rather than teaching from a book.
