Texcel and Raytheon Announce Leading Edge IETM Solution.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 1998--

- System to be Utilized by the U.S. Navy -

Texcel Research Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Texcel International, announced an alliance with Raytheon Systems Company's Training and Services segment to integrate their software products to produce a best of breed interactive electronic technical manual (IETM IETM Interactive Electronic Technical Manual

IETM Integrated Electronic Technical Manual (US Army)
IETM Integrated Engine Technical Manual (US Air Force)
) development and delivery system. The combined offering will leverage the complementary strengths of the Texcel Information Manager content repository and Raytheon's Advanced Integrated Maintenance Support System (AIMSS AIMSS Advanced Integrated Maintenance Support System
AIMSS Amsterdam International Medical Summer School

). The result will be an IETM authoring, management, and delivery solution with unmatched functionality, based on proven technology. The first release of the solution will be tailor made for aerospace/defense contractors and branches of the military that must comply with government regulations for delivery of weapons systems and other documentation.

"Our mutual customers brought us together," explained James Capparelli, President of Texcel Research, Inc. "Among them is the U.S. Navy, which uses Texcel Information Manager to author and manage technical information at a number of sites. Customers like the Navy want to be able to take advantage of the AIMSS tools for IETM authoring and delivery while maintaining the source information in their Texcel content management system."

The best-of-breed offering will combine the user-friendly IETM authoring features of AIMSS with Texcel's very flexible content management system. With the addition of AIMSS to the Information Manager environment, users will be able to support class 4/5 IETM development out of the same database as their paper TMs and ETMs. Maintenance of multiple databases will no longer be necessary. All IETM data will be stored as SGML SGML
in full Standard Generalized Markup Language

Markup language for organizing and tagging elements of a document, including headings, paragraphs, tables, and graphics.
 or XML XML
 in full Extensible Markup Language.

Markup language developed to be a simplified and more structural version of SGML. It incorporates features of HTML (e.g., hypertext linking), but is designed to overcome some of HTML's limitations.
and content sharing of text and graphics will be supported across all document types. The new product will not only reduce overall data maintenance costs but it will also facilitate the migration of existing TMs and ETMs to the much more dynamic class 4/5 IETM environment.

Texcel Information Manager allows users to define and manage chunks of information, such as the steps to repair a particular mechanical component. That information might be displayed in the IETM in the context of numerous diagnostic or repair operations. However, it only needs to be changed once, and the change is reflected wherever used. This saves enormous amounts of manual effort and produces higher quality deliverables. Texcel Information Manager uses the internationally-adopted SGML and XML text markup (text) markup - In computerised document preparation, a method of adding information to the text indicating the logical components of a document, or instructions for layout of the text on the page or other information which can be interpreted by some automatic system.  standards, so that information maintained in the database remains nonproprietary and conforms to government requirements at all times. All kinds of nontextual data, such as drawings and images, can also be accessed from and versioned in the Texcel content management system.

About AIMSS

AIMSS is a class 4/5 IETM authoring system designed to DOD (1) (Dial On Demand) A feature that allows a device to automatically dial a telephone number. For example, an ISDN router with dial on demand will automatically dial up the ISP when it senses IP traffic destined for the Internet.  specifications (MIL-PRF-87268 and MIL-PRF-87269). It consists of a fully integrated set of authoring tools built around a database management system. AIMSS is designed to simplify the creation of class 4/5 IETM databases. It provides a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Pronounced "wiz-ee-wig." It refers to displaying text and graphics on screen the same as they will print on paper or display on a Web page.  development environment for the IETM author that requires no knowledge of SGML or programming to operate. Editors are provided for the creation and maintenance of IETM structure, topics (descriptions, procedures, etc.), frames (screens), and primitive objects (text, tables, graphics, dialogs, etc.). A built-in viewing system gives the author the ability to view and test the IETM without the need to parse and compile SGML.
