Texas tops U.S. taxable removals; 4 states increase.

Taxable malt beverage removals decreased 3.46 million barrels in 1991 to 181 million barrels. The figure was a 1.9-percent drop from 1990's 184.47 million, according to recent numbers complied by Phil Katz of the Beer Institute.

Overall packaged taxable beer removals,which accounted for 88.7 percent of total taxable removals, decreased 2.1 percent to 160.5 million barrels last year. Draught taxable removals increased 0.1 percent to 20.5 million barrels - 11.3 percent of total taxable removals.

Only four of the 17 states and combination groupings showed increases over the 1990 performance, with Virginia leading the way with an overall gain of 742,690 barrels. The largest decrease was reported in Colorado, which showed a 1.12-million barrel decline.

According to the report, Texas led the nation with 11.8 percent of the total malt beverage removals, and was followed closely by Colorado, which had 11.2 percent of the total. California was third, slating a 10.8-percent share of taxable removals, followed by Wisconsin with 8.6 percent. New York rounded out the top five states with an 8.5-percent share of the nation's taxable beer removals.
