Texas nursing home resident steals ambulance.

A 50-year-old resident of Care Inn in Plainview, Texas, decided she wanted a little fresh air. So she quietly plopped herself into the driver's seat of a running, unattended ambulance parked in front of the nursing home and drove off.

The resident, whose name was not released by Plainview police, made it about 30 blocks before sheriff's officers stopped the vehicle, Plainview police Capt. Dennis Harkins said.

This was no ordinary escape stint: The resident stopped at the Hale County Sheriff's Office to ask for directions to Amarillo, stopped at two red lights and drove up on a curb a few times, according to Harkins.

The owner of the ambulance, Lubbock Aid Ambulance Co., chose not to press charges because of the woman's mental state and because no one was hurt, Harkins said. However, the ambulance driver will "probably learn from this experience," he said.
