Texaco forms international exploration division; Dr. Bruce S. Appelbaum Appointed Division President.


WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 1996--Texaco announced today the formation of a new division charged with designing and implementing the company's international exploration program.

The division is responsible for finding new, profitable crude oil and natural gas reserves, identifying additional discovered reserve opportunities and working with the company's producing divisions to commercialize these prospects and the new discoveries.

, whose oversight responsibilities include exploration activities, said, "The creation of this division is another concrete example of the importance Texaco places on our exploration programs and activities in achieving the company's plan for growth. The actions of this division will better position Texaco to take advantage of the upstream opportunities available to us in our core areas, as well as those in underexplored and frontier regions on the international front.

The International Exploration Division becomes effective May 1, 1996. Based in Texaco's offices in Bellaire, Texas Bellaire is a city in Harris County, Texas within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 15,642 and is completely surrounded by the cities of Houston and West University Place. , it will incorporate the current activities of Texaco's Central Exploration Department and will be led by Dr. Bruce S. Appelbaum, who has been appointed President.

Appelbaum, currently Offshore Division Manager for Texaco Exploration and Production Inc. in New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded , will relocate to the Houston area.

Dr. Bruce S. Appelbaum, Offshore Division Manager for Texaco Exploration and Production Inc., was born in Buffalo, New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
, on October 23, 1947. He was graduated from the State University of New York (body) State University of New York - (SUNY) The public university system of New York State, USA, with campuses throughout the state.  at Buffalo with a bachelor of arts degree in geology in 1969. He earned a master of science degree in geological oceanography oceanography, study of the seas and oceans. The major divisions of oceanography include the geological study of the ocean floor (see plate tectonics) and features; physical oceanography, which is concerned with the physical attributes of the ocean water, such as  in 1971 and a doctorate in geological oceanography in 1974, both from Texas A&M University.

Appelbaum joined Texaco in 1990 as Division Manager of Texaco U.S.A.'s Offshore Exploration Division in New Orleans, with responsibility for offshore exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. Prior to Texaco, Appelbaum held domestic and international exploration positions with independent oil and gas companies, including Domestic Exploration Manager for SEDCO SEDCO Schuylkill Economic Development Corporation (Pottsville, Pennsylvania, USA)
SEDCO Southern Engineering Development Corporation
 Energy and Division Exploration Manager for Union Pacific Resources.

Appelbaum was named to his current position in charge of exploration and production operations in all federal waters and the Texas state waters of the Gulf of Mexico in October 1993.

Appelbaum is a member of Texaco's Upstream Planning Group. He serves as Chairman of the American Petroleum Institute's (API) Executive Committee on Exploration Affairs and as Chairman of the Offshore Operators Committee. He is a Director of InRoads/New Orleans, Inc. and Chairman of the New Orleans United Way Petroleum Group for 1996.
