Testing problem gambler hotline in Ontario.


TORONTO -- Problem gamblers in Ontario are now able to access help through a new pilot project that will provide program using a telephone hotline centre. The project will test the viability and effectiveness of counselling over the telephone.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is a consortium of mental health clinics at several sites in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Its name in French is Centre de Toxicomanie et de Santé Mentale. (The acronym CAMH is most commonly pronounced "Cam-H".  will administer the $250,000 TeleCounselling program of the Ontario Problem Gambling Problem gambling is an urge to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. The term is preferred to compulsive gambling among many professionals, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word.  Research.

Callers will speak to a professional counsellor, and will complete six 45-minute treatment sessions over an eight to ten week period. Between sessions, clients complete a range of assignments, exercises and readings from a handbook. In addition, callers will be contacted six months after completing the program to assess their progress.

If the program proves successful it will be extended throughout the province, and adapted to include other languages and delivery methods, such as the Internet and face-to-face delivery.

Approximately 340,000 Ontarians experience some form of gambling problem from moderate to severe, and very few seek treatment because of the stigma stigma: see pistil.
