Terrible saint?


A growing number of Russian Orthodox are campaigning for the canonization canonization (kăn'ənĭzā`shən), in the Roman Catholic Church, process by which a person is classified as a saint. It is now performed at Rome alone, although in the Middle Ages and earlier bishops elsewhere used to canonize.  of Ivan the Terrible Ivan the Terrible: see Ivan IV.

, the first czar of Russia. While his name seems to obviously exclude him from saintly consideration, his supporters say that historians' accounts of Ivan's massacres are either exaggerated or completely fabricated.
