Terre Haute power plant launches new era for coal, environment.

O'Leary joined PSI Energy, a subsidiary of Cinergy Corp., and Destec Energy in celebrating the completion of the Wabash River Coal Gasification Coal gasification

Repowering project -- the world's largest coal gasification plant.

An innovative joint venture among PSI, Destec Energy of Houston, and the U.S. Department of Energy, the facility turns coal into synthetic gas and removes over 98 percent of the fuel's sulfur before burning it, a process that helps utilities comply with new clean air laws. Because this technology has the potential to enable continued use of high sulfur coal, the Department of Energy committed $219.1 million toward the plant's construction and initial operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales .

``This is the largest plant of its kind in the world,'' said Cinergy President James E. Rogers. ``It demonstrates a technology that can help preserve jobs and regional economies that depend on higher-sulfur coal.''

O'Leary, along with Rogers and Destec President Charlie Goff addressed an audience that had gathered from around the nation at Indiana State University Indiana State University, main campus at Terre Haute; coeducational; est. 1865 as a normal school, became Indiana State Teachers College in 1929, gained university status in 1965. There is also a campus at Evansville (opened 1965).  to commemorate the plant's completion. A symposium on coal gasification technology was held as well as tours of the plant.

The plant is capable of processing 2,700 tons of coal per day for the net production of 262 megawatts of electricity per hour. The project was selected in 1991 for the DOE's Clean Coal IV program. Construction of the Wabash River project began in September 1993. Peabody Coal Co.'s Hawthorn mine in southwest Indiana is the plant's coal supplier.

The gasification process also produces two reusable by-products: sulfur, used in the manufacture of agricultural fertilizer, and slag, a material that has a number of uses, including paving and construction.

``This project has created approximately 1,400 construction jobs and 100 permanent jobs in western Indiana,'' said Rogers. ``In addition to the economic benefits, this project may set the stage for a new type of coal-fired plant that can generate electricity with significantly reduced emissions.''

PSI Energy is Indiana's largest electric supplier, providing power to more than 636,000 customers in 69 of the state's 92 counties.

Destec Energy Inc. is a major independent power company that owns power generation and coal gasification facilities which produce, sell and market electricity, steam and synthetic fuel gas.
