School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave. University Singers and Chamber Choir A chamber choir is the choral equivalent of a chamber ensemble, using voices instead of instruments. The choir will usually consist of 5-15 elite singers, often associated with a larger choral group. Tonight, Beall Hall The University Singers and UO Chamber Choir will share a concert at 8 p.m. today in Beall Hall. Tickets at the door are $5 general admission, $3 for students and senior citizens. The University Singers, directed by Shannon Chase, will perform `My Soul's Been Anchored in the Lord' by Moses Hogan Moses George Hogan (March 13, 1957 - February 11, 2003) was an African-American composer and arranger of choral music. The Chamber Choir, directed by Sharon Paul, will sing a rare three-movement work, `Trois Chansons,' by Maurice Ravel Noun 1. Maurice Ravel - French composer and exponent of Impressionism (1875-1937) Ravel ; a Johannes Brahms motet; Orlando Gibbons' `Ho- sanna to the Son of David'; and a love song by Halsey Stevens Halsey Stevens (1908-1989) was a US composer and music educator. Music and Dance of Bali and Java Tonight, Gerlinger Lounge The School of Music's Balinese Gamelan gamelan Indigenous orchestra of Java and Bali and, more generally, of Indonesia and Malaysia. A gamelan usually consists largely of gongs, xylophones, and metallophones (rows of tuned metal bars struck with a mallet). Gamelan polyphony is complex and many-voiced. will be joined by a Eugene-based Javanese gamelan and dancers from Lane Community College in a program of music and dance from Bali and Java. The performance is at 8 p.m. in the Gerlinger Hall Alumni Lounge, 1468 University St. Admission is free. A gamelan is a percussion orchestra of bronze gongs, metallophones, drums and other instruments. Music in the Balinese portion will be performed by UO students who have been taught by visiting professor Michael Tenzer of the University of British Columbia Locations Vancouver The Vancouver campus is located at Point Grey, a twenty-minute drive from downtown Vancouver. Chamber Music on Campus Friday, Room 198 Student chamber ensembles will give a Chamber Music on Campus concert at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Room 198 of the music school. Admission is free. The program will include a Ludwig van Beethoven serenade serenade [Ital. sera=evening], term used to designate several types of musical composition. Opera and song literature yield numerous examples of the serenade sung or played by a lover at night beneath his beloved's window; outstanding is for string trio; songs for voice and guitar by John Dowland; Claude Debussy's `Petite Suite' for piano, four hands; a J.S. Bach Trio Sonata for traverso and harpsichord harpsichord, stringed musical instrument played from a keyboard. Its strings, two or more to a note, are plucked by quills or jacks. The harpsichord originated in the 14th cent. and by the 16th cent. The Jazz Cafe Friday, Room 178 The School of Music's Jazz Cafe presents its final evening of jazz combos in a cabaret setting at 8 p.m. Friday in Room 178 of the music school. Student groups - including a five-guitar ensemble - will perform standard and modern jazz repertory, including music by Wayne Shorter; composers of the Great American Songbook - Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers and George Gershwin; as well as student compositions. Future Music Oregon Saturday, Room 198 New electro-acoustic compositions created by student composers will be featured in a concert Saturday by Future Music Oregon, the School of Music's music technology program. The concert, under the direction of associate professor Jeffrey Stolet, begins at 8 p.m. in Room 198 of the music school. UO Choral Ensemble: Sospiro Tuesday Central Lutheran Church Sospiro, a choral ensemble of graduate students that specializes in both early music and new music by UO composers, will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Central Lutheran Church, 18th Avenue and Potter Street. Admission is free. The program will feature music by Brahms, Ludwig Senfl, and UO composers Jerry Hui, Aaron Manela, Steve Rodgers, Katie Saxon and Matthew Svoboda. All That Brass! Tuesday, Beall Hall UO brass ensembles will be in the spotlight for `All That Brass' at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday in Beall Hall. Admission is free. The program will feature the Trombone trombone [Ital.,=large trumpet], brass wind musical instrument of cylindrical bore, twice bent on itself, having a sliding section that lengthens or shortens it and thus regulates the pitch.
