EDUCAUSE 2000

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 2000

Two Tennessee schools, The University of Memphis The University of Memphis is a public research university located in Memphis, Tennessee, United States, and is a flagship public research university of the Tennessee Board of Regents system.  and Volunteer State Community College, are the first schools in the state to create comprehensive online campuses that connect administrative services, academic programs and community building tools under one online roof.

University of Memphis graduate student, Malathi Bhattacharjee, realized the benefit of an online campus when she took a leave of absence from the university to care for a family member.

"Campus Pipeline has been very helpful to me in keeping touch with the University. I was able to know what was happening on campus and access campus email during my stay in California. The ability to stay connected to Memphis meant a great deal to me," said Bhattacharjee.

"Having the ability to make group study sessions available through Campus Pipeline's chat rooms will be a valuable tool and can help students improve their grades. Campus Pipeline will give them the opportunity to dialog with other students and provide opportunities for them to collaborate on class materials."

Although both the online campuses of The University of Memphis and Volunteer State Community College are built upon the Campus Pipeline Web platform, the online campuses are every bit as customized as their bricks-and-mortar counterparts. The online campuses not only sport the schools' colors and logos, they contain the services, information and technology of most importance to each school.

The University of Memphis, for example, has integrated online registration and grade viewing services into the Campus Pipeline Web platform. In the future, the university will add services for faculty and staff into the Web platform.

In addition to registration and grade viewing services, Volunteer State Community College has integrated a TouchNet gateway, so their mostly non-traditional, working student body can conveniently pay tuition from almost any Internet connection.

The Campus Pipeline Web platform is easily customizable to reflect each school's unique identity and personality and includes Web-based email Web-based email or webmail is a term referring to an e-mail service intended to be primarily accessed via a web browser, as opposed to through an application such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, Mozilla's Thunderbird or Apple's Mail. , course-specific chat rooms and message boards, academic and career research centers, faculty and student Web sites, online shopping tools, and a personalized news service.

Through integration with the campus' choice of student information systems, distance learning programs and other online services, the Campus Pipeline Web platform also delivers access to registration, grade posting and viewing, tuition payment, and other services.
