Tennessee, UConn still 1-2 in AP Top 25

Tennessee and Connecticut remained 1-2 in the Top 25 after an easy week, while North Carolina moved up to No. 3 with one easy victory.

The Lady Vols received 48 of the 50 first-place votes Monday for the second week in a row following their 83-51 victory over Old Dominion. UConn got the other two first-place votes after routing Virginia 75-45, while 12 of the 25 teams held the same spot they had last week.

North Carolina wasn't one of them. The Tar Heels moved up two places after a 60-point win over Wofford.

Maryland, meanwhile, fell one spot to No. 4 after a rugged week that included its first loss of the season to Rutgers. The Terrapins just completed 14 games in the 31 days.

"We're going to get away from each other and we're going to allow them to be students because I don't really think the schedule has been very kind to allow them to be students, first," coach Brenda Frese said.

Maryland lost to Rutgers 68-60 last Monday, then bounced back with victories over Middle Tennessee State, Northern Iowa and Temple.

"We've played 12 different conferences in that time, so I think we've seen everything, we're prepared, and really coming out of this stretch with a tremendous amount of confidence," Frese said.

The Terps have two weeks of finals, and their next game is Dec. 20 against James Madison.

Stanford moved up one spot to No. 5, and Rutgers fell two places to sixth.

After their big win over Maryland, the Scarlet Knights fell to Duke 49-44 in a lackluster game Thursday night. Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer benched her starters on Saturday in a 59-42 victory over Army at the Maggie Dixon Classic.

"You honor people on your team by respecting the fact that they've worked extremely hard," the Hall of Fame coach said. "You can't consider it a right to play. It's a privilege to represent your team. It's a privilege for me to coach. I'm going to go out there and prepare as hard for Army as I do for a Maryland or anyone else. When we do that, everything else will take care of itself."

The Scarlet Knights were scheduled to play No. 11 California on Monday night.

The rest of the top 10 remained the same with Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma and Baylor. The Lady Bears were followed by Texas A&M, West Virginia and Auburn.

Duke moved up two spots to No. 15, while DePaul and Notre Dame each dropped one spot, to 16th and 17th, respectively. Arizona State was 18th, followed by Ohio State and Texas.

Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt, Wyoming and Old Dominion round out the Top 25.
