 with the idea of following a peregrine falcon from the barrier islands off Texas to the Arctic. In order to do so, he enlisted the aid of George Vose George Vose, (born October 4, 1911 - June 20, 1981) in St Helens), was an English football half back. In his early days, he played for Peasley Cross Athletic and Everton F.C. on a trial basis. In August 1932, he was sold to Manchester United. He would stay with United until 1946. , a Cessna pilot with an old plane and lots of stories of his own. Together they tracked a bird they named Amelia, and then came back south again through the Caribbean and Mexico.

Along the way, Tennant tells the reader about the animals they encountered, migration, pesticides and other dangers, but the story is also about their adventures and mishaps, including storms and conflicts with law enforcement of all types. Their pursuit of the bird became all-consuming, to the point that they took many risks in their commitment to follow the path they established for themselves. Tennant is a wildlife writer who understands and respects nature, but he tells his tale with the abandon of a cowboy riding a bronco bronco: see mustang. .
