Telstra Joins New International Cable Project.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 22, 1996--Telstra Corporation Limited has joined 20 other international telecommunications organizations to plan a high-technology submarine optical fiber cable system linking South East Asia, the Middle East and Western Europe.

The cable system, known as SEA-ME-WE SEA-ME-WE South East Asia, Middle East, Western Europe (fiber optic connections)  3, will be designed as a submarine digital lightwave superhighway connecting United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates, federation of sheikhdoms (2005 est. pop. 2,563,000), c.30,000 sq mi (77,700 sq km), SE Arabia, on the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. , Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.

The implementation of the SEA-ME-WE 3 cable system will provide South East Asia, Middle East and Western Europe with unprecedented lightwave telecommunications capacity and is expected to be the platform for innovative wideband services.

SEA-ME-WE 3 will enhance Telstra's ability to deliver world-quality service and meet rapidly growing customer demand for broadband and Internet services.

SEA-ME-WE 3 will use direct signal amplification and adopt the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (communications, standard) Synchronous Digital Hierarchy - (SDH) An international digital telecommunications network hierarchy which standardises transmission around the bit rate of 51.84 megabits per second, which is also called STS-1.  (SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) The European counterpart to SONET. ) multiplexing technology that will improve the efficiency with regard to the monitoring and controlling of the flow of telecommunications traffic. The advanced technology will make each fiber pair within the network capable of carrying up to 120,960 x 64 Kbps circuits. This represents a quantum leap over the existing optical fiber technology -- such as that used by SEA-ME-WE 2 and PacRim -- which has a capacity of 7,560 x 64 Kbps circuits in each fiber pair.

John Hibbard, Telstra's General Manager, International Carrier Business, said that the SEA-ME-WE 3 project represents an important opportunity for Telstra to extend its submarine optical fiber cable network through Asia to the Middle East and Europe.

The other 20 organizations currently participating in the planning of this project are BT of UK, France Telecom, MARCONI of Portugal, Telecom Italia, OTE of Greece, Turk Telekom of Turkey, ARENTO ARENTO Arab Republic of Egypt National Telecommunications Organization  of Egypt, MOPTT MOPTT Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Telecommunication  of Saudi Arabia, OPT of Djibouti, ETISALAT ETISALAT Emirates Telecommunications Corporation  of UAE, PTC (PTC, Needham, MA, www.ptc.com) Long a world leader in mechanical computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering software, PTC, through acquisitions and reorganization, has transformed itself into a leading provider of Internet-based B2B solutions for discrete manufacturers.  of Pakistan, VSNL VSNL Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (India)  of India, SLT of Sri Lanka, CAT of Thailand, Telekom Malaysia, PT INDOSAT of Indonesia, Singapore Telecom, AT&T of the USA, KDD of Japan and DTAG of Germany.
