As a small businessperson, I am concerned about the rising cost of healthcare. Because I want to provide good benefits for my employees, I urge you to support H.R. 660/S. 545 and its efforts to make health care more accessible through Association Health Plans (AHPs). Cost is the number one reason small business owners can't afford to provide health insurance to their employees. Association Health Plan legislation would help by saving small businesses 15-30 percent in health insurance costs. AHPs would enable me to offer better health insurance. This legislation would allow me to group together with other clubs to purchase more affordable insurance through our professional association. Large employers and unions are already allowed to take advantage of these economies of scale and administrative efficiencies, and I believe that is it only fair to allow small businesses the same opportunity. Without AHPs, I am at a competitive disadvantage In policy debate, a disadvantage (abbreviated as DA, and sometimes referred to as a Disad) is an argument that a team brings up against a policy action that is being considered. AHPs also afford our members a better chance to contribute to the effort of expanding healthcare access for the uninsured.
