EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

KABC (Channel 7) topped Spanish-language broadcaster (Channel 34) for the ratings lead among Los Angeles TV stations in September. KABC was the first station to switch its local news broadcast to a high-definition format. Most local stations have followed suit.

Earlier this year, CBS Corp.-owned stations KCBS (Channel 2) and KCAL (Channel 9) moved into a new high-definition broadcasting facility in Studio City. The facility is completely tapeless. All video shot in the field is fed into computer servers and multiple producers have access to the same footage.

"No one is running around looking for a particular tape," said spokesman Mike Nelson.

The switch also allows KCAL to broadcast 50 L.A. Lakers games in high definition each season.

Overall, the 15 highest-rated TV stations in the L.A. market combined for just under 1 million average viewers daily, down 4 percent compared with a year ago.

THE PACESETTER

KABC (CHANNEL 7)

THE affiliate of the Walt Disney Co.'s ABC Network, KABC (Channel 7) held on to the top spot as the highest-rated station in the Los Angeles market based on September ratings from Nielsen Media Research.

Viewership for the station declined by about 1,000 viewers compared with last year, but remained 6,000 higher than No. 2 KMEX (Channel 34).

The station has been broadcasting local news programming in high-definition format for nearly two years. It was the first station to make the changeover locally. Other high-definition programming in addition to primetime shows include long-running game shows "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune."

The station sponsors about 200 events in Southern California annually. Upcoming events include KABC's annual toy drive in conjunction with firefighters from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties as well as the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

The station was founded in 1949 as KECA-TV. It adopted the current call letters in 1954 and introduced its "Circle 7" logo in 1962.
