Television executive enjoying the view from the top.

My alarm is set for 5:25 in the morning but I get up a minute before it goes off. I'm out the door by 5:39. I have an exercise schedule that depends on the day of the week.

On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday I start with a 6 a.m. group exercise class. Wednesday ends at the gym. Sunday and Friday begin with a 25-mile bike ride with friends. Saturday starts with a four-mile run.

Afterward, I go by Pete's in order to bring my assistant Meredith a non-fat vanilla latte. It makes for a better day. I get myself a drink as well.

I'm at the desk a little after 8. I live in Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  and work in the Fox Plaza Fox Plaza is the name of a couple of buildings:
  • Fox Plaza (Los Angeles)
  • Fox Plaza (San Francisco)
in Century City in the building they used for "Die Hard."

I take the first couple of minutes to look out my window. I have by far the nicest office of my career. I'm on the 18th floor with wall to wall glass. I have a magnificent view: At one end I can see the ocean and Catalina Island Catalina Island: see Santa Catalina.  and the airport. I can look down at the studio and the lot, the rest of Century City and downtown; the snowcapped mountains way to the east, the Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is situated in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park covers 4,210 acres (17 km²) of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America.  Observatory, the Hollywood sign The Hollywood Sign is a famous landmark in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles, California, spelling out the name of the area in 15.2 m (50 ft)[1] high white letters. , and Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. .

Then I dive into work.

I head the organization that gets all of Fox's cable channels carried by cable systems (there are 30 of them), DirecTV, and EchoStar. We get people to watch these channels and we bring a lot of money into the organization.

Our responsibility is to get a newly launched channel and all its related pieces into people's homes. We end up having considerable influence on what channels the company invests in. We decide which channel we can get into the marketplace, how much we can charge for it, how many viewers are going to see it.

The first work-related thing that I'm doing in the morning is getting on the phone with the top program executives for Comcast and Time Warner. We're always in the state of negotiating something. Time Warner, for example, wants to create a video-on-demand package for its subscribers called "The Best of Television." Viewers would be able to go through the programs ("Prison Break," "24,") and choose what they want to watch. It hasn't been done yet, but Time Warner is trying it. I was on the phone with Time Warner, talking about which cities they would trial test it in, whether they should charge for the test period, or whether it should be free.

As far as business negations with Comcast go, we are trying to increase our production of high definition games for sports channels around the country and Comcast is going to be the first beneficiary. They own cable systems serving several of the markets where we are going to increase our high definition games-Phoenix, Seattle, Portland, parts of Detroit. The other day I was on the phone with Comcast figuring out what cable systems have the opportunity to take advantage of these high definition games. We only want to do it if it a technical possibility.

Then I'm checking in with each of the network heads, making sure everything is running smoothly. Let's say the people who run FSN (Full-Service Network) A communications network that provides shopping, movies on demand and access to databases and a variety of interactive services.  here in LA tell me there is an opportunity to purchase the rights to telecast additional Angeles games. I ask if the market wants these games, how much we can make in advertising, and if we can get any money from cable operators for this.

For lunch, I often go to the Studio Commissary COMMISSARY. An officer whose principal duties are to supply the army with provisions.
     2. The Act of April 14, 1818, s. 6, requires that the president, by and with the consent of the senate, shall appoint a commissary general with the rank, pay, and emoluments
. I will have a business lunch there with a cable operator, or, for example, a meeting with the head of one of our agencies who does a lot of Web site work for us.

In the afternoon I have a variety of meetings. Right now I am being pressed to go up to a meeting where a colleague is going to prep me on a deal to put Fox TV content on iPods. I have other short meeting in the afternoons when I look at that day's creative ads or scripts to promote channels that go into the different trade magazines. I make sure they are OK.

I leave at 6:45. My wife and I have watched every single Daily Show for five years. Bedtime is a negotiation. I want to go to bed at 10; my wife at 12. So we usually go to bed at 11.
