Teleglobe, one of the world's leading telecommunications carriers, today announced that its affiliate company, TEGL TEGL Training and Employment Guidance Letter  Mexico, has received a license to provide Internet access and other enhanced services from the Comision Federal de Telecomunicaciones.

Teleglobe plans to deploy a Globeinternet point of presence in Mexico City in the near future, and to expand its office there. The international carrier will offer services directly to ISPs, academic networks, corporations and carriers.

"This license will give our customers in Mexico local access to our Globeinternet network, giving them better service at a lower cost," said Paolo Colombi, regional vice president for the Americas for Teleglobe. "This license is a first step in building a larger presence in Mexico, as part of Teleglobe's regional and global expansion."

As part of this expansion, the company is pursuing opportunities to obtain a concession for facilities-based voice service. Teleglobe also has a license to offer Internet access in Panama, and has complementary marketing and operating plans in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador and Venezuela.

The global carrier also is seeking regulatory and governmental approvals, authorizations and concessions in countries throughout Latin America.

Mexico is a key market in Teleglobe's Latin American expansion strategy because of its strong growth potential. There are now 200 companies offering Internet access services in Mexico, serving some 400,000 customers, according to Infolatina. In just one year, the Internet services industry has more than doubled, with sales worth $13 million in the first quarter of 1998.

In this year alone, ISPs in Mexico will invest 30 million dollars.

Through its Globeinternet service, Teleglobe has become a leading provider of global IP connectivity. Globeinternet connects Internet service providers in more than 75 countries with dedicated international fiber-optic and/or satellite transmission facilities at speeds of 64 kbps to 155 mpbs.

Teleglobe is recognized as a world leader in intercontinental telecommunications.

The Teleglobe network includes submarine cable and satellite facilities linking North America with over 240 countries and territories, meeting the global connectivity needs of established and emerging wireline and wireless carriers from around the world, as well as those of Internet service providers, multinational corporations and broadcasters.
