According to a recent report by Access Media International, the number of Internet users in Japan reached 18.3 million in 1999, growing at a rate of 28 percent. Although the overall growth of Internet access is moderate in Japan (for example, 11 percent of Japanese homes have an Internet connection, compared with 37 percent of US homes), Japanese lead the way in use of alternative access devices with Internet capabilities - such as mobile phones. Over 53 million Japanese now reportedly own such devices.

Teleglobe also plans to offer international long distance services in Japan, based on the company's Type-1 license, beginning the 4th Quarter of 2000. These services will be offered to resellers, corporate users and residential customers, and will include low long distance rates to over 240 countries, as well as prepaid and postpaid calling cards and other popular international telephony services.
