Lucent Technologies (NYSE NYSE

The new systems will serve to meet the growing demand for broadband services, and also allow the extension of advanced high-speed services (such as simultaneous high-speed Internet access and voice service) to a larger number of corporate and individual Telefonica subscribers in the state of Sao Paulo.

Telefonica can also use the ports for ADSL 2+, which is the second-generation ADSL technology, a state-of-the-art technology and part of the Stinger(R) DSL DSL

This new generation of ADSL technology features larger downstream capacity and is up to three times faster and has wider reach compared to traditional ADSL. It also operates with existing networks, detecting CPE's (customer premise equipment or user modems) automatically.

As part of the agreement, Lucent will update the operator's network management software. The next-generation NavisAccess(TM) DSL will be used for real-time monitoring of the Lucent Stinger(R) DSL network. NavisAccess(TM) DSL is the only system that can support more than 1 million DSL ports, making it possible to group equipment for management, service level and adaptable monitoring, thus streamlining the operational process of the DSL plant.

Lucent has already installed more than 28,000 Stinger(R) access concentrators (around 6 million ports) in more than 25 countries. Recently the company announced a $2.5 million investment to manufacture the broadband access concentrators (ADSL) Stinger(R) in its plant in Campinas, Brazil.

"This agreement strengthens our technological partnership with Telefonica and consolidates Lucent's leadership in the Brazilian ADSL market", says Jose Roberto Campos, president of Lucent Technologies in Brazil.

About Stinger(R) DSL Access Concentrator

Stinger(R) DSL Access Concentrator is a DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL.  - Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) allows telephone lines to make faster connections to the Internet. It is a network device, located near the customer's location, that connects multiple customer Digital Subscriber Lines (DSLs) to a high-speed Internet  - featuring 14 slots with ports that can serve up to 72 subscribers, providing a total of up to 1008 ADSL access ports per piece of equipment installed in the operator network. The Stinger(R) DSL Access Concentrator supports IP and ATM technologies simultaneously, which means Telefonica will have greater flexibility and security in designing its network to supply new services such as video, voice or data. Besides IP and ATM technologies, Stinger(R) DSL Access Concentrator features a variety of network interfaces: E1 IMA (Interactive Multimedia Association, Annapolis, MD) An earlier trade association founded in 1988 originally as the Interactive Video Industry Association. It provided an open process for adopting existing technologies and was involved in subjects such as networked services, scripting , E3 ATM, STM-1, STM-4, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet.
