Teledyne and Caterpillar join metalcasting software project at Argonne Laboratory.

Teledyne and Caterpillar caterpillar (kăt`əpĭl'ər, kăt`ər–), common name for the larva of a moth or butterfly. Caterpillars have distinct heads and are segmented and wormlike.  Join Metalcasting Software Project at Argonne Laboratory

Teledyne, Inc. and Caterpillar, Inc. have joined with the U.S. Dept of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory Argonne National Laboratory, research center, based in Argonne, Ill., 27 mi (43 km) SW of downtown Chicago, with other facilities at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, 50 mi (80 km) W of Idaho Falls, Idaho. Founded in 1946 by the U.S.  in Argonne, Illinois, to improve metalcasting methods and products.

The effort centers on COMMIX, computer software developed by Argonne that predicts temperature and flow of hot fluids, such as molten metal poured into molds.

COMMIX has the potential to reduce costs and factory rejection rates of cast metal products, such as engine blocks and aircraft components, according to according to

"COMMIX will help to advance metal casting Metal casting

A metal-forming process whereby molten metal is poured into a cavity or mold and, when cooled, solidifies and takes on the characteristic shape of the mold.
from a trial-and-error art to a science with a sound theoretical base and growing body of solid, technical knowledge," Sha said.

The three-year program will analyze molten metal flow through complex molds with thick and thin sections.

One goal, Sha said, is to develop techniques to produce castings that need as little machining as possible to reach their finished shape. Another goal is to produce castings that have low porosity porosity /po·ros·i·ty/ (por-os´it-e) the condition of being porous; a pore.

1. The state or property of being porous.

, fine grain structure and retain good blending of alloy alloy (ăl`oi, əloi`) [O. Fr.,=combine], substance with metallic properties that consists of a metal fused with one or more metals or nonmetals.  elements. These properties will improve quality and reduce rejection rates during inspection.

COMMIX originally was developed to predict the mixing of liquid sodium used to cool advanced nuclear power plants.

With more than 200 research projects under way in basic and applied science, Argonne is the largest fedeally funded scientific laboratory in the Midwest. It is operated by the Univ of Chicago for the U.S. Dept of Energy.

Caterpillar, headquartered in Peoria, Illinois Peoria, Illinois (named after the Peoria tribe) is the largest city on the Illinois River and the county seat of Peoria County,GR6 Illinois, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 112,936. , is the world's largest manufacturer of earth-moving, construction and material handling equipment, and manufacturer of diesel and natural gas engines and turbines.

Teledyne is a high-technology, multi-product company consisting of more than 100 individual companies and 50,000 employees.
