) announced today that Teledyne Brown Engineering Teledyne Brown Engineering, or TBE, formerly Brown Engineering, is a Huntsville, AL–based subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies (NYSE: TDY). TBE was acquired by Teledyne Technologies in 1966. , Inc. has received a $6.9 million contract from the U.S. Army to continue management and operations of the Rapid Response System (RRS RRS - An early definition of Scheme. ), a transportable system designed for the safe on-site processing of chemical agent training sets.

Known as Chemical Agent Identification Sets, or CAIS CAIS - Common APSE Interface Specification , these now- obsolete chemical agent training sets were used by the government to train military personnel in the recognition and detection of chemical warfare materiel. Those sets not used in the training process were buried, the approved method of disposal at the time. The Army has since been chartered to locate past burial sites and remove and dispose of any chemical materiel items found.

"We have been managing and operating the Rapid Response System since 1996, and we are now the sole provider of RRS services to the U.S. Army," said Robert Mehrabian, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Teledyne Technologies. "We are extremely pleased to be able to continue our critical support to the Army through the safe disposal of these materials."

Teledyne Brown Engineering began testing of the RRS in 2000 at the Army's Deseret Chemical Depot The Deseret Chemical Depot is a chemical weapon storage area located in Utah, 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Salt Lake City. It is related to the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility.  in Tooele, Utah. Upon completion of the test phase, the system transitioned to operational status and was returned to Teledyne Brown Engineering's headquarters in Huntsville, Ala. in July 2001 for system upgrades and storage, pending future Army requirements.
