 of The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), has been selected by the Department of Energy (DOE) to develop the Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator A radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) is a simple electrical generator which obtains its power from radioactive decay. In such a device, the heat released by the decay of a suitable radioactive material is converted into electricity by the Seebeck effect using an  (MMRTG MMRTG Multi Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator ) for use in planned deep space exploration projects. The team will focus on the development and production of a common thermoelectric power generator platform that can be used interchangeably for any deep space or planetary exploration mission. Teledyne Energy Systems' portion of the contract, if fully funded over ten years, is valued at over $50 million.

"We are pleased to team with Boeing in this innovative program to bring a flexible, advanced power system to space science missions."

The MMRTG to be developed by Boeing and Teledyne will build upon the proven design of Teledyne Energy Systems' prior record setting generators, updated with modern engineering and materials science. Previous Teledyne Energy Systems' thermoelectric generators, which powered the Viking and Pioneer spacecrafts, operated up to 31 years and 7.6 billion miles from Earth. Boeing will lead overall program management and perform system heat rejection design and system to spacecraft integration. Teledyne Energy Systems is responsible for the design of the thermoelectric materials and core power generator components. The DOE will perform fueling and final testing of the qualification and flight units.

The first planned mission that will use the new MMRTG power system is the Mars Science Laboratory This article or section documents a scheduled or expected spaceflight.
