TeleProcessing's OPERA selected by Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile.

SIMI VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 1, 1997--

Integrated access device An IAD is a customer premises device that provides access to wide area networks and the Internet. Specifically, it aggregates multiple channels of information including voice and data across a single shared access link to a carrier or service provider PoP (Point of Presence).  improves flexibility,

serviceability, and reliability of cell sites

TeleProcessing ("long distance" processing) An early IBM term for data communications.  Products, a leading supplier of wide area network access equipment, Tuesday announced that the company's integrated WAN access product, OPERA has been selected by Bell Atlantic NYNEX NYNEX New York-New England & X for the Unknown (Telephone Company)
NYNEX New York Network Exchange
Mobile for use in integrating various functions within the carrier's Washington, D.C./Baltimore region cell site infrastructure.

The OPERA system platform enables Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile to integrate several functions within cell sites by: (1) terminating cell switch voice traffic, (2) delivering bandwidth to an X.25 pad running CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) A low-speed, digital, wireless data network that is an enhancement to an existing analog cellular network. Based on IBM's CelluPlan II, CDPD provides a packet overlay onto the AMPS network and moves data at 19.  (Cellular Digital Packet Data (communications, protocol) Cellular Digital Packet Data - (CDPD) A wireless standard providing two-way, 19.2 kbps packet data transmission over exisiting cellular telephone channels. ) wireless data services, (3) providing connection to new RF "fingerprinting" security applications, and (4) eliminating the need for a dedicated POTS line for site support. The integrated traffic is delivered to the MTSOs (Mobile Telephone Service Offices) over T1 lines.

"We are extremely pleased to be working with Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile on this project. OPERA Opus 2 was designed to minimize carrier soft costs and service provisioning issues and it's particularly satisfying to have this validated by one of the premier cellular service providers in the industry," said Zora Kirby, TeleProcessing's CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "OPERA's next generation system intelligence provides BANM BANM Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile

enhanced efficiency and reliability at a lower overall cost."

OPERA is TeleProcessing's new integrated WAN access platform that provides telecommunications service providers and enterprise network managers the ability to integrate various WAN applications and multiple and diverse services into one wide area network access system. Some options of OPERA Opus 2 in the cell site infrastructure application include:

- prEVENT Mapping enables T1 alarm triggered network reconfiguration for programmable disaster recovery and back-up. Automatic bandwidth allocation and proactive configuration scheduling means if any one T1 line fails, OPERA proactively re-allocates cell site applications (voice, data, security, POTS) into the remaining T1 circuits.

- ADPCM (Adaptive Differential PCM) A widely used variation of PCM that codes the difference between sample points like differential PCM (DPCM), but can also dynamically switch the coding scale to compensate for variations in amplitude and frequency.  (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation pulse code modulation: see modulation.

See PCM.

(data) Pulse Code Modulation - (PCM) A method by which an audio signal is represented as digital data.
) compresses 48 voice channels from two T1 interfaces onto a single outgoing T1 and enables the economic consolidation of T1 voice traffic to/from remote cell switches to central PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) The worldwide voice telephone network. Once only an analog system, the heart of most telephone networks today is all digital. In the U.S.  switches.

- Digital Cross Connecting (DACSing) allows for the cross connection of DS0 level applications from one T1 line to another. When used in conjunction with prEVENT Mapping, bandwidth is re-allocated across other available circuits. This enhances the overall flexibility and reliability of the site infrastructure without additional cost.

- Hierarchical Network Visibility is a unique feature of the OPERA management and control system which allows operating personnel the ability to view all of the access infrastructure and configuration at once. In addition, configuration of bandwidth is performed quickly and easily because the operator only "sees" the functionality of the installed OPERA.

- Remote Configuration and Diagnostics eliminate various soft costs associated with cell site support. All aspects of the OPERA system can be accessed via a dial-up line. This means troubleshooting can be done just as effectively remotely as locally. With OPERA's alarm reporting capability, the system can be configured to trigger a modem to dial up a field technician's home base on specified network alarm events.
