The age of interactive television and of the tripling of current available cable channels came a step closer when ATT's Bell Laboratories demonstrated a fiber-optic cable capable of carrying 6.8 billion bits of information simultaneously. The ordinary telephone wire can carry 64,000 bits. The thin strand Strand, street in London, England, roughly parallel with the Thames River, running from the Temple to Trafalgar Square.
