Tektronix enhances popular Windows-on-Unix software, unveils plans for future upgrades; WinDD 1.1 to support network file sharing protocol.

WILSONVILLE, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 1995--Tektronix (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange

 applications.

WinDD 1.1 offers better links between Windows and Unix data by allowing users to take advantage of the Network File System (NFS (Network File System) The file sharing protocol in a Unix network. This de facto Unix standard, which is widely known as a "distributed file system," was developed by Sun. See file sharing protocol and WebNFS.

Tektronix also unveiled its plans for future upgrades to WinDD and announced a new high-volume pricing strategy for WinDD Server software and WinDD for Workstations local clients.

WinDD, based on Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.5, allows Unix platform users to access Microsoft Windows 3.x applications running in native mode on a PC application server, and will soon offer the same capability for Windows 95 applications. With 486-class or better performance and native compatibility, WinDD offers a more complete Windows-on-Unix solution than software emulation. WinDD is compatible with Tektronix NetStations and X terminals and workstations from Sun, Silicon Graphics, Hewlett-Packard, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  and DEC. Other X Window desktop systems (Macintosh X servers, or workstations and X terminals from other vendors) can also access WinDD across the network using the X protocol.

"WinDD's rapid acceptance in the enterprise marketplace reflects the tremendous demand for better integration between Windows and Unix," said David Pinckard, Tektronix vice president and general manager for Network Displays. "Tektronix will continue to add functionality to WinDD as we pursue our strategy of developing products with the broadest market appeal."

WinDD 1.1 and NFS

The addition of the NFS protocol allows WinDD transparent, remote access to shared files across the network. Users of WinDD can now access Unix and other network servers as if they were files on a local disk. In this way, NFS will give WinDD users seamless access to the entire range of corporate data.

WinDD 1.1 with NFS will also allow Windows NT-based enterprises to enjoy the cost of ownership and centralized administration advantages of Tektronix NetStations and X terminals. WinDD 1.1 will permit Tektronix Netstations and X terminals to boot directly from a WinDD application server, without requiring, as is otherwise the case, a Unix host for booting and downloading fonts. WinDD 1.1 thus gives network planners the option of using cost-effective Tektronix NetStations, for example, in place of more expensive PCs without sacrificing performance or access to popular Windows applications.

Planned Upgrades to WinDD

Tektronix yesterday revealed two of several enhancements and new capabilities planned for future releases of WinDD. A fall release of the product, which will incorporate Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  Server 3.5.1, will permit users to run Windows 95-optimized applications, and cut and paste To move an object from one location to another. When the operation is complete, there is nothing left in the original location. It may refer to relocating files from one folder to another or to relocating selected text or images from one document to another.  between Unix and Windows applications. In addition, Tektronix will offer an option that allows organizations which have standardized on the X protocol to distribute WinDD via X. The ICA Ica (ē`kä), city (1993 pop. 108,724), capital of Ica dept., SW Peru, on the Pan-American Highway. It is a commercial center for the cotton, wool, and wine produced in the region. There are several summer resorts nearby.  protocol, which minimizes load on the network, will remain the preferred method for sending WinDD data across the network.

"WinDD set the benchmark for Windows application access in Unix environments," noted Pinckard. "While our competitors struggle to play catch-up, we intend to stay ahead with added features, better compatibility and higher performance."
