Tektronix addresses demand for multi-client desktops; Leveraging the company's successful introduction of its WinDD(TM) software, Tektronix announces trade-up program for owners of competing X terminals.WILSONVILLE, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 17, 1995--Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :TEK See TeX. ), the fastest-growing major X terminal vendor, Tuesday announced a new program to provide non-Tektronix X terminal owners with a smooth migration path to Microsoft Windows See Windows. Widely criticised for being too slow (hence "Windoze", "Microsloth Windows") on the machines available then. (TM) application access. With the company's recent introduction of WinDD software, (see Oct. 31, 1994 announcement), Tektronix customers now have seamless access to Microsoft Windows applications, UNIX UNIX Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics). client/server networks, midrange and mainframe applications -- all from a single TekXpress(TM) multi-client desktop. Tektronix will continue to build on this WinDD technology with future developments for other platforms. In response to urging from customers, however, Tektronix has implemented an aggressive trade-in program allowing owners of X terminals from other vendors to inexpensively upgrade to this Windows access and multi-client functionality today. "We've been overwhelmed by the interest in multi-user Microsoft Windows access from corporate MIS departments," notes Dave Pinckard, director of marketing for the Tektronix Network Displays Division. "In fact, the product's broad appeal has led many of the larger corporations to ask whether they could `trade-in' their existing X terminals in order to roll-out a complete enterprise-wide solution. This program is designed to answer those requests." Tektronix WinDD software is a multi-user network version of Microsoft's Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. Server 3.5 operating system operating system (OS) Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs. that allows a single 486 or Pentium PC to provide Windows applications for 15-20 concurrent users. The entire Microsoft Windows interface appears in a window on the TekXpress multi-client desktop, while the NT operating system and applications operate on a fully scalable PC server. By specifically devoting the multi-client desktop to providing virtually any platform's user interface -- and connecting it via network to a server that is specifically devoted to providing the operating system, application and data -- Tektronix is providing corporate MIS departments with a compelling enterprise-wide solution. Companies can now deploy a single form of desktop system, and focus on making all future software, storage or processor upgrades at the server level. Under this trade-in offer, which covers any vendors' X terminal, customers will be able to purchase the latest XP200 or XP350 logic units from Tektronix for $650 and $900 (50-60% off), respectively. Tektronix will help customers determine compatibility with their existing monitors, keyboards, etc. There are no restrictions on quantity, but customers must take shipment by February 24, 1995.
