Teknekron Ships The First CORBA 2.0-Compliant Publish-And-Subscribe ORB; Provides full C++ support and guaranteed delivery.

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 1995--Teknekron Software Systems Inc., a market leader and pioneer in next generation client-server software tools, today announced the immediate availability of its CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  2.0-compliant object request broker See ORB.

(programming) Object Request Broker - (ORB) Part of the OMG CORBA specification, an ORB's basic function is to pass method invocation requests to the correct objects and return the results to the caller.
 (ORB).

Called ObjectBus(TM), Teknekron's ORB is unique in its ability to provide publish-and-subscribe capabilities, full C++ support and guaranteed delivery of information. The ObjectBus software allows developers to easily and efficiently build object-oriented distributed applications that can exchange information with each other in real time, regardless of the computer, network or location of the user.

Based on the proven Teknekron Information Bus(R) (TIB See NIST binary. )(R) technology, the ObjectBus software solves the three fundamental problems facing today's multi-national corporations: 1) implementing real-time decision support systems based on up-to-the-minute information from around the world; 2) moving toward an object-oriented computing environment; and 3) providing connectivity to legacy systems to protect investments in mainframes, minicomputers, software applications and personnel.

"ObjectBus software is a proven approach that goes beyond today's limited solutions that tend to address only one of the three major problems facing today's global corporations," said Kieran Harty, Ph.D., manager of advanced development for Teknekron Software Systems. "Our goal with ObjectBus software is to offer a much richer set of functionality than any single client-server or ORB package could provide. At the same time, it simplifies the implementation of distributed object computing."

ObjectBus software supports two communication models: publish-and-subscribe and request-reply, both of which are CORBA compliant. Publish-and-subscribe moves beyond the one-way conversation style of request-reply inherent in the client-server model to provide an interactive, peer-to-peer mode of communication. Publish-and subscribe allows data to be shared among all subscribing applications.

ObjectBus software is based on Teknekron technology that has been in use for over 10 years in industries such as manufacturing, financial services, health care, construction and transportation. In semiconductors, the technology is assisting manufacturers to achieve the goals of shorter time to market, higher yields and better profit margins by providing a higher level of integration between processes on the manufacturing floor.

"SEMATECH SEMATECH Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology  has partnered with Teknekron to initiate a project to validate aspects of the CIM (1) (Computer-Integrated Manufacturing) Integrating office/accounting functions with automated factory systems. Point of sale, billing, machine tool scheduling and supply ordering are part of CIM.  Framework using Teknekron's ObjectBus product. In line with our support of global standards, we believe the combination of CORBA compliance with Teknekron's publish-subscribe technology will set new levels of standards compliance," said Alan Weber, manager of SEMATECH's Manufacturing Execution Systems program. "It provides suppliers of CIM Framework-conformant manufacturing applications a standards-based approach for integrating them in a distributed computing environment See DCE.

Distributed Computing Environment - (DCE) An architecture consisting of standard programming interfaces, conventions and server functionalities (e.g. naming, distributed file system, remote procedure call) for distributing applications transparently across networks
. This in turn offers an opportunity for lowering the costs of ownership of CIM and Enterprise systems for our member companies."

In addition to CORBA 2.0 compliance, ObjectBus software supports the OMG interface definition language See IDL.

Interface Definition Language - (IDL) 1. An OSF standard for defining RPC stubs.

2. Part of an effort by Project DOE at SunSoft, Inc. to integrate distributed object technology into the Solaris operating system.
(IDL (1) (Interface Definition Language) A language used to describe the interface to a routine or function. For example, objects in the CORBA distributed object environment are defined by an IDL, which describes the services performed by the object and how the data ), C++ and C (release 1.1) language mappings, the basic object adapter (architecture) Basic Object Adapter - (BOA) Part of the CORBA architecture.  (BOA) for static bindings and the dynamic invocation interface The Dynamic Invocation Interface (DII) (DII) is an API which allows dynamic construction of CORBA object invocations. It is used at compile time when a client does not have knowledge about the object it wants to invoke.  (DII). Applications may use CORBA defined interfaces to communicate with the ObjectBus software, or they may take advantage of the IDL interface for publish-and-subscribe communication.

Additionally, Teknekron's ORB implementation offers value-added services such as multi-platform support for UNIX UNIX

, Windows 3.1 and NT, and VAX VMS, publish-and-subscribe, WAN support and guaranteed delivery.

Price and Availability

Teknekron's ObjectBus software supports UNIX, Windows 3.1 and NT, and VAX VMS platforms, and costs between $2,000 and $8,000, depending on the platform. The software is available now directly through Teknekron, its distributors or through the World Wide Web at the Uniform Resource Locator See URL.
