Prosecutors are considering criminal charges against a teenage driver who struck and killed a 10-year-old boy near Churchill High School on Monday.

An initial investigation indicated that Shawn Patrick Tichenor, 16, of Eugene was speeding south on Bailey Hill Road approaching Westleigh Street before the 4:45 p.m. crash, Eugene police said. Police had not yet determined how fast Tichenor was driving, but the posted speed limit is 35 mph.

Another car headed south on Bailey Hill had stopped to allow Vaclav Hajek of Eugene to cross the street. Tichenor allegedly drove his pickup truck around the stopped car and struck Vaclav as the boy entered the roadway, police said.

Vaclav, who lived nearby, was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center Sacred Heart Medical Center may refer to:

The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into , Eugene's traffic engineer Tom Larsen said.

So last summer, a crosswalk was installed at Westleigh Street to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic, he said.

But neighbors said few people use the crosswalk.

Cynthia Anderson said she has called the city at least five times about drivers failing to stop for children trying to use the crosswalk. Her son crosses Bailey Hill Road daily and often waits as 10 to 12 cars zip past without stopping.

"There's no enforcement," she said. "There aren't even signs."

Larsen said the city has fielded calls about the stretch of roadway south of the high school. But his crash statistics don't back up neighborhood claims.

The city recorded one crash - a car hitting a tree - at the Bailey Hill and Westleigh intersection in all of 2003, 2004 and 2005 combined, he said. Numbers for 2006 were not available Tuesday.

There were nine recorded crashes at Bailey Hill Road and Warren Street during the same period. None of the wrecks Wrecks is a one-man play by Neil LaBute, that was first staged in Cork, Ireland. "In terms of crash history, this is not a dangerous intersection," Larsen said.

The nearby junction of Bailey Hill Road and West 18th Avenue had 31 crashes over the same three-year period, and the intersection at Bailey Hill Road and West 11th Avenue is often named Eugene's most dangerous intersection, Larsen said.
