Teen downloaded child porn to PC; 19-year-old is locked up for underage sex.

A TEENAGER was found to have downloaded more than 1,000 images of child porn after his computer was taken for a service, a court heard.

Lewis Williams confessed his crime to police when his father was wrongly arrested following a tip-off from a computer shop in High Street, Barry.

While being interviewed by officers, the 19-year-old from Porlock Drive, Sully, also admitted having a sexual relationship with a girl he thought was 17 but who turned out to be only 13.

At Cardiff Crown Court yesterday, Williams was sentenced, having pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children and two counts of sexual activity with a child at an earlier hearing.

Steven Donaghue, prosecuting, said the child pornography offences came to light when the computer was taken for some "refurbishment" work on December 11 last year.

Mr Donaghue said police were alerted when a file containing indecent images of children was discovered by a shop worker.

In all, 1,072 static images were uncovered along with 12 movie images.

Nine of the static images and two of the movie files were in the most serious, category five, classification and a further 87 static images and six movie files were classed as category four.

"On December 13, police attended his home address in Sully," said Mr Donaghue.

"The defendant was there along with his mother and he admitted straight away it was he who had downloaded the images."

Williams told police he became curious about child pornography when he was around 16.

Mr Donaghue added: "He also said during interview that he had formed a relationship with a 13-year-old girl.

"He said that he had been in contact with her by text and over the internet."

The court heard Williams thought the girl was 17 because that was the age she gave out on her internet profile page but police investigations found shewas only 13.

Philip Warren, defending, said: "He comes from a totally respectable and highly-concerned family.

"Because it was the father who had taken the computer into the shop, it was his father who was arrested.

"It wasn't until he (the defendant) admitted the offence that the father was de-arrested."

Judge John Curransaid: "I bear in mind the age of the defendant but he is old enough to vote, old enough to serve in the Army and old enough to serve on a jury and with adulthood comes adult responsibility."

He sentenced Williams to 16 months' imprisonment in a young offenders' institution, concurrently, for both counts of sexual activity with a child.

For downloading child porn, Williams was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment to run concurrently with the sexual activity with a child offences.
